Oberammergau and the Black Plague

It was during the Thirty Years War that the deadly and contagious disease known as the Black Plague broke out in Europe. Before it ran its course, it struck down one in every three persons throughout and left its wake of untold misery, panic and hunger. There was no chance to escape from this dreadful disease. Only one little village in the south of Germany was spared: Oberammergau.

The townspeople of Oberammergau made a vow that if they were spared they would give a play of the life of Christ every ten years. The fact that they were saved is one of the most amazing mysteries in history.

Thus the first Passion Play took place in 1634; originally it was a small performance, played on a meadow, by villagers and local peasants.

Oberammergau has produced several gifted poets who have set the play to verse as well as lengthened it, until it achieved its present form as an artistic masterpiece. To qualify as actors the performers must be native to Oberammergau, amateurs and persons of high moral and ethical principles. It is a great honor to be chosen to play the part of Christ or any other leading role. The beautiful costumes are made by the local villagers and their long hair is natural (no wigs) as they start to grow their hair and beards a year or more in advance in preparation for the play.

Being an actor signifies the passionate belief of the locals. The hundreds of actors, children as well as adults, receive no reimbursement for their time and devotion to the exhausting performances (seven hours a day, five days a week from May until October). Although the widespread fame of the passion play and international tourism have brought thousands of people from all around the world to see the play, the complete sincerity of the Obrammergauer has never been dimmed. Their vow is still most important in their lives, and with great pride Oberammergau is now preparing for the Passion Play 2010.

The village Oberammergau itself is a most rewarding place to visit any year. It has everything to offer in the way of recreation and relaxation: breathtaking alpine scenery, clear, healthy climate, excellent food, comfortable accommodation, lovely paths for strolling, a marvelous alpine swimming pool, outdoor cafes, wine cellars, cultural events, like concerts and opera performances. Cable cars take you to the top of the mountains. During the winter months it is a lovely place to enjoy skiing and all other winter activities.
